Disappointed
By B. Henawi
i ordered this item despite the negative-recommendation written by other users assuming that i will get the item no matter what. i requested it one month before the exam day, but 5 days left & still i didn't get the item neither an update from the seller! so i contacted the seller where he advised that it is a tracking-system-issue & will be solved within a week or so! which means, exam is already over!

so i asked for refund & recall the item back ... two days later i got the refund!

i hoped the processing speed for sending the item was as much as refuning itself!

How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life, by Scott Adams

Everything you want out of life is in that bubbling vat of failure. The trick is to get the good stuff out.

Scott Adams has likely failed at more things than anyone you’ve ever met, including his corporate career, his inventions, his investments, and two restaurants. So how did he go from hapless office worker to the creator of Dilbert, one of the world’s most famous syndicated comic strips, in just a few years?

In this funny yet serious book full of personal stories, Adams shares the strategies he has used to invite failure in, embrace it, then pick its pocket. Among his contrarian lessons:

• Goals are for losers. Systems are for winners.
• A combination of mediocre skills can make you surprisingly valuable.
• You can manage your odds in a way that makes you look lucky to others.

From Booklist
The creator of the Dilbert comic strip is also the author of several nonfiction books that apply Dilbert’s philosophy to the workplace. Here he takes an autobiographical approach, using his own life to illustrate his thesis that failure isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Adams’ own list of failures is—given his spectacular success as a cartoonist—surprisingly lengthy: a couple of unsuccessful restaurants as well as computer games, inventions, and online businesses that all tanked. Adams isn’t bummed by any of his flops because—and this is the key element of his philosophy—you learn by trying, not by succeeding. And every failure in life helps point us in the direction of ultimate success. (Adams says he would never have become a cartoonist if it weren’t for a combination of personal failures and the successes of some of his friends, who were willing to take personal risks.) Readers familiar with the author’s previous nonfiction will note the same easygoing, conversational style here, an approach that works perfectly for blending humor with serious advice. --David Pitt

Review
“Adams has a funny, refreshingly considered set of ideas about how to find success—and what that success will look like when one gets there.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“Scott Adams has drawn nearly 9,000 Dilbert cartoons since the strip began, in 1989, and his cynical take on management ideas, the effectiveness of bosses, and cubicle life has affected the worldview of millions. But he built his successful career mainly through trial and error—a whole lot of error, to be exact.
—Harvard Business Review

Consumed My Whole Day - Very Enjoyable Read & Interesting
By Chad M. Sorenson
I had this pre-ordered after reading the WSJ article. It came yesterday around noon and I finished it at 4:00 AM this morning, with few breaks within that time frame. It wasn't the plan for my day, but I don't regret changing my day around to read this book.

I would say any book that holds my interest like that deserves a 5-start rating, though there are a few things that I'd tweak to get it closer to perfection. My official score, being a tough grader, is a 4.6/5.0 and I wouldn't resell it for twice what I paid ... especially now that it's fully highlighted and sticky-noted throughout (which makes the book more valuable to me now because I've identified the portions that spoke directly to me and my own experiences).

I really enjoyed Scott's independent thinking and challenges of conventional wisdom throughout this book, especially as it contrasts with other self-help, goal-setting or business advice books. For instance, choosing an opportunity for which one has some sort of inherent advantage rather than blindly prescribing "you can do whatever you want" appeals to my pragmatic mind. I have wrestled with this exact conclusion within the past year as I work through my own list of new ideas and opportunities, so I enjoyed that perspective as it resonates with my own thinking.

I really enjoyed the thinking on pg. 40, which is fully highlighted, less perhaps a couple sentences. This is where Scott talks about his mental model of not wanting to sell his time due to limited upside and finding a product that is infinitely scalable. I appreciated this candidness, which allows the reader to better understand the later "luck" and apparent rapid success of Dilbert. It's clear to me, Scott's success was a lifetime in the making, the product of continued experimentation and the tenacity to stay at it. This whole book was helpful to me, as my model is exactly the same and the road to success is anything but certain when you're placing bets on what the public wants. Having a system that embraces and anticipates failure, in particular, is an essential tool to avoid letting temporary results bleed over into derailing what could be a highly successful longer-term career choice.

Pg. 88, talking about when to quit and how successful ventures often have SOME element of success early-on also resonated with me, and is another page that is more yellow than white after reading this book. These comments also directly resonated with some false-starts I've had, where I correctly pulled the plug after minimal investment of time because things just did not feel right almost from the get-go. I felt poorly about pulling the red handle so early while I was ejecting, but now looking back I know I was practicing the exact type of discipline one needs to practice when trying totally new things. Plan on a good chunk of your initial tests, ideas and hypotheses being off the mark and blindly plowing time and effort at soft-starts is a recipe for disaster. One of my favorite quotes in the book is "Persistence is useful, but there's no point in being an idiot about it." That got a "lol!"

I also appreciated Scott's thoughts on useful core skills, especially psychology. This topic has become more and more interesting to me after sluffing through Pscych 202 in college, when it seems like a diversion from more useful topics. I now see how important that is, and also how little I know in this universe of knowledge. The terms page of psychological topics is a lifetime of potential study in itself, so the book leads you to new domains of study if you so choose.

Scott urges the reader to not accept anything at face value, and my personal model embraces a good chunk of this body of wisdom with a few of my own twists. Any book that holds your interest and gives you new things to think about is worth owning and reading, in my opinion. This book satisfies that criteria with ease. Thank you for writing it and good luck with the book.

excellent advice
By Amazon Customer
The book was a joy to read

His key ideas are easy to follow because he keeps it simple and Scott Adams writes in a clear and witty manner

For example the chapter on applying a system vs setting goals and trying to follow them was worth the price of the book many times over for me (and this is reinforced through the book). In his own words goals are a reach-it-and-be-done situation (where you are often waiting to achieve it someday in the future) whereas a system is something you do on a regular or daily basis with a reasonable expectation that doing so will get you to a better place in life. Wanting better health or wanting to lose 10 kg are goals. Being active everyday is a system. One is tied to another - but goals people are fighting the feeling of discouragement at each turn and the systems people are feeling good every-time they apply their system.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone smart and weary of reading tired cliches in the self-help genre. The book is a breath of fresh air!

An Almost Successful Book about Success
By William Carpenter
Scott Adams's How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life is almost a success. In it Adams tells us about he succeeded and offers his readers his advice on how to be both successful and happy.

Adams is at his best when he writes about figuring out how things work and what is important. Readers of his popular blog will recognize such topics as the moist robot, the single most important metric to measure, the five most important factors for happiness, how to thrive without using freewill, and other such topics.

One of his key principles is to distinguish goals from systems. Generally, it's better to pursue a system to get what you want rather than to pursue a goal. Goals are generally bad things as they focus you on what you have not accomplished and therefore feel negative. Unfortunately his discussion of the difference between goals and systems is confused and unclear. He seems to be saying that the reader's goal should be to come with a system that works.

I do appreciate that Adams consistently urges the reader to experiment, to be open minded, and not to follow the advice of cartoonists. The focus should be on what works for you. His humility is a welcome relief from much of the Success literature.

Some parts of the book, especially in the middle chapters, read like annotated lists constructed quickly from Internet searches. Other parts of the book are much better and many of Adams's insights are interesting, captivating, and even brilliant. The tone of this book is quite serious - there are even research footnotes - and it is clear that Adams believes he has something important to share with the reader. Fortunately much of the book is entertaining and includes humorous examples to lighten the occasionally sententious tone of some pronouncements.

Overall this is a useful and interesting book. I look forward to testing some of his suggestions and seeing if they improve my life.

(Note: The Kindle edition is satisfactory, though navigation to the footnotes and back to the text works inconsistently.)

This is the textbook I've been looking for!
By Gregory J. Casteel
I've been looking for a really good textbook on political ideologies for a long time now. I'm a political scientist; and, although I haven't yet had the opportunity to teach a course specifically on ideology, I do lecture on the topic of ideologies when I teach comparative politics courses; and the topic of ideology often comes up in several of my other courses. Whenever I touch on a topic in class, especially if I'm not able to cover it in detail, I like to be able to recommend books to my students in case they want to learn more about the subject. (Believe it or not, some students really do want to learn more than what they're required to know for the test -- it's shocking, I know; but it's true.) So, I've been trying to find a textbook I could use if I ever had the opportunity to teach an undergraduate course on ideology, that I could also use for reference when preparing lectures about ideologies, and that I could recommend to students who want to learn more about the subject. I also wanted to find one that was reasonably priced -- the single biggest complaint I hear from students is that textbooks are too expensive; and I have to agree with them on that point. Finding a suitable ideology textbook has not been easy. None that I came across before I found this one met all of my requirements. (I was particularly disappointed with Leon P. Baradat's textbook, "Political Ideologies: Their Origins and Impact," 5th edition, which I have also reviewed for Amazon.) But this textbook by Andrew Heywood not only meets all of my requirements and expectations, it surpasses them. Is it a perfect book? No. (I'll explain why in a moment.) But it is considerably better than any other ideology textbook I've had an opportunity to examine thus far. I'm very pleased with it, in spite of its flaws, and would definitely recommend it to any political science professor who is looking for a textbook for use in an ideology course. I would also recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about political ideologies. It is certainly the textbook I've been looking for.

Following an introductory chapter that discusses ideology in general terms, there are ten chapters covering the world's major ideologies (presented in roughly chronological order, from oldest to newest): Liberalism, Conservatism, Socialism, Anarchism, Nationalism, Fascism, Feminism, Ecologism, Religious Fundamentalism, and Multiculturalism. These are then followed by a concluding chapter that discusses whether ideology is still relevant today. Within each of the ten chapters covering specific ideologies, there is a brief (one page) preview of the ideology, a section on its origin and development, a discussion of the core themes of that ideology, a discussion of the major divisions within the ideology itself (e.g. between classical liberalism and modern liberalism) and of hybrid ideological forms (e.g. socialist feminism or conservative nationalism), and a final section discussing how the ideology has responded to the challenges of globalization. Scattered throughout the text are "boxes" that discuss (a) key figures within each ideology (e.g. for Liberalism: John Locke, Adam Smith, Immanuel Kant, Thomas Jefferson, Jeremy Bentham, James Madison, John Stuart Mill, T.H. Green, and John Rawls), (b) key concepts central to each ideology (e.g. for Conservatism: pragmatism, authoritarianism, paternalism, Toryism, and libertarianism), (c) contrasting perspectives on various issues (e.g. freedom, democracy, human nature, equality, the state, gender, religion, culture, etc.) that highlight the many ways in which different ideologies view the world differently, and (d) cleavages within each ideology (e.g. the differences between "Equality feminism" and "Difference feminism" or between "Shallow ecology" and "Deep ecology"). There are also "boxed" definitions of key terms throughout the text, as well as a number of figures that are meant to illustrate some of the ideas discussed in the text. The definitions are quite helpful, though a bit oversimplified at times. Most of the figures are also helpful; though a few of them seem like little more than pointless filler that doesn't add any real value to the text. The layout of the book is visually appealing; and the text is well written and easy to read. Students with little or no background in political science or the history of ideas should be able to follow the text without encountering any serious problems. But don't jump to the false conclusion that, because this text is easy to understand, it must be "dumbed down" in some way. While it may eschew the obscure and intellectually challenging language favored by political philosophers in favor of a more plainspoken style, it still manages to cover pretty much everything that an introductory textbook on ideology could reasonably be expected to cover. If you want to add a bit more depth to the discussion of ideology, you might consider supplementing this textbook with a reader such as Festenstein and Kenny, "Political Ideologies: A Reader and Guide" (2005), which could almost be seen as a companion volume to this textbook. (I'm pretty sure it was not designed specifically to be a companion to this text, since it comes from a different publisher; but, in terms of content, it's hard to imagine a better match between a textbook and a reader.) But even if you choose to use this textbook by itself, without a reader, it should prove satisfactory for an undergraduate-level course. Other ideology textbooks I've examined -- most notably the one by Baradat -- are far inferior to this one in terms of the quality and depth of their contents. (In my opinion, if you want to learn about political ideologies, Wikipedia is a better source than Baradat's textbook.) But if you really want to learn about ideologies, Heywood's textbook is a great place to begin.

But even this text has its flaws. The content is excellent; the writing style is great; even the layout is wonderful. But the typos ... oh, God, the typos! I don't think I've ever seen a textbook with this many typos before. Don't textbook publishers employ proofreaders anymore? (I'll gladly take the job if it pays reasonably well and I can do it from home, BTW. I can't think of a job I would find more appealing or would be better suited for: reading textbooks all day and correcting other people's grammar and spelling. Sign me up!) Fortunately, most of the typos in this book are of the harmless variety -- using the wrong form of a word (e.g. singular instead of plural, present tense instead of past tense, finite verb form instead of participle), omitting a definite or indefinite article, or mistyping or omitting a letter (e.g. "irrekevent" for "irrelevant", "is" for "it", "he" for "the") -- and are little more than annoying distractions in an otherwise excellent text. But some of these typos are so obvious that there's simply no excuse for them, such as when multiple cross-references on the same page read: "see p. 000" (apparently a place-holder for the correct page number, which should have been added before the book went to print). This sort of thing reflects very poorly on the editorial standards at Palgrave Macmillan, the publisher of this textbook. These typos were irksome, to be sure; but we shouldn't exaggerate their importance. What really matters when evaluating a textbook is the quality of its contents. And the contents of this textbook are of such high quality that I am willing to overlook the many, many (far too many) typos, and recommend this textbook over its competitors.

I should also point out -- this is not a criticism, mind you, just something that you might want to be aware of -- that this textbook was published in the UK, and thus is written in British English rather than American English; so it uses British spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation throughout. Some American students might not be all that familiar with the differences between British and American English; but I seriously doubt they'll have too much difficulty understanding the text. Some of the spellings might look a bit odd to them (e.g. "labour" instead of "labor"), and they might encounter a handful of unfamiliar words (e.g. "cooker" instead of "stove"); but this shouldn't cause American students too much of a problem, so long as they have college-level reading skills. Professors might want to let their students know what to expect before they start reading, and advise them to be sure to look up any words they don't understand; but I don't see any reason why this textbook shouldn't be used in American colleges and universities.

My bottom line: This is an excellent introductory textbook on political ideologies; and I highly recommend it. I plan to use it if I ever teach a course on the subject. I also plan to use it as a reference source the next time I need to prepare a lecture on ideology. And I will be recommending it to any of my students who want to learn more about ideology.

well done for college level
By s.f.
for an introduction to political ideologies this book is well done and the price is even better. there is a newer version but i would recommend this version for price reasons only, the next edition does include more ideologies towards the end of the book but not terribly important especially for an introduction. there are some criticisms that nationalism and anarchism are not ideologies but they are included and in my opinion are certainly ideologies. the best part of this book is, certainly not the writing, but certain issues are compared by all ideologies, like perspectives on democracy, religion, environment. the book starts with a brief introduction chapter and then proceeds to cover the old ideologies first; liberalism, conservatism, socialism, nationalism, anarchism, fascism is covered and then post material ideologies feminism, ecologism, religious fundamentalism etc. the book is straight forward and easy to understand but many people, probally younger people, will find the read incredibly boring. if you need this book for a class i would recommend this edition instead of the new one, if you want to learn ideologies and are not really interested in personality in writing buy this book for the price. if you do not read too much this book wont be too advanced to understand but just plain boring for reading pleasure but if you don't want a skewed view of ideologies this book is the way to go there is no agenda setting or propaganda in the book.

Auster's Austerities
By Christopher B. Murray
This collection of essays, interviews, and prefaces explores the theme of "Hunger" (whether spiritual or artistic) in modern fiction, poetry, and art. Auster's essays celebrate (or provide a general overview of) works (or careers) of important artists, such as Knut Hamsun, Samuel Beckett, John Ashbery, William Bronk, Georges Perec, and Franz Kafka. Kafka is the subject of two essays in the book, and his story "A Hunger Artist" is for Auster a sort of template or emblem for the seriousness of the modern artist's task. Hunger, for Auster, seems to be a kind of rebellion, a reluctance to collaborate with the failures of Western culture, and yet it is, at times, both purifying and self-destructive. Auster does not present simple resolutions regarding this predicament. Rather, he appreciates the noble struggle each of these artists has waged. And though Auster seems to admire each of the figures he writes about, he is not uncritical of them. His piece entitled "Kafka's Letters" reveals his deep admiration of Kafka, yet Auster does not present the Czech author as a "literary giant", but as a man--an amazingly insightful, intelligent, generous man, who, despite his troubled inner life, managed to remain committed to his art and to his friends until his excruciating last moments. The piece exalts Kafka by humanizing him, deepening our admiration of both Kafka and Auster. "The Art of Hunger" ends with "The Red Notebooks," an interesting meditation on coincidence, which includes fascinating anecdotes from Auster's own life. In all, this is a satisfying collection of prose pieces that fans of Auster's fiction (and/or fans of the artists discussed in the book) should thoroughly enjoy.

The Ophthalmology Examinations Review (Second Edition), by Tien Yin Wong

Many new treatments and diagnostic procedures in ophthalmology have been refined or newly developed during the past four years, a new edition reflecting these changes is most timely.

The scope and aim of the book will be consistent with the first edition, which provides a broad review of the specialist ophthalmology examinations for final year ophthalmology residents and trainees. The book deals primarily with key facts and topics that are important from the examination perspective. Only information and facts that are considered relevant and critical to the exams are covered, with topics that may be of scientific interest, but are not commonly tested in exams, specifically left out. Time-challenged readers will also benefit from the knowledge acquired from various other sources or textbooks that are now organized and synthesized in this book. While not meant to replace the standard textbooks, enough information is contained within the book to serve as the main revision text nearer the exams.

The style and format of this book is intentionally didactic, with questions and short answers. The answer includes a "model opening statement," followed first by a classification system to aid organization of facts, and then the core explanation in concise short notes. "Exam Tips" are inserted to provide an insight into techniques of answering different types of questions and when appropriate, a "Clinical Approach" section is also included.

In the new edition, topics such as new understanding of disease mechanisms (e.g., genetics of eye diseases), new investigations (e.g., OCT), and novel procedures and treatment (e.g., the use of antivascular endothelial growth factors, new refractive surgical techniques) are covered.

This book will be a valuable guide to the final year ophthalmology residents and trainees taking the specialist ophthalmology examinations, particularly for exams with a strong oral or viva component. Although primarily aimed at candidates attempting the British postgraduate exams (FRCS, FRANZCO, MRCS, MRCOphth and FRCOphth), it is also useful for other examination systems (e.g., the American Boards). Many junior residents, in fact, find the information handy during grand rounds.

Review
"It is an excellent review for the ophthalmologist studying for the board examinations. It is well organized, simple and direct ... and should be used by clinicians in training long before the eleventh hour."
-- Archives of Ophthalmology

"... it is ideally suited for any candidate taking basic qualifying tests in ophthalmology anywhere in the English speaking world ... It is quite a remarkable and comprehensive fund of information and must surely contain every question ever put by any examiner in an oral/viva examination and also covers all the published syllabuses both for basic sciences and clinical components of our examinations ... Trainees, therefore, might consider the use of this book as a reasonable guarantee for success in the examinations mentioned provided preliminary reading has been completed. It could also be of assistance to harassed examiners in drawing up suitable lists of topics for viva examinations and, in addition, assist them in the difficult task of setting and checking MCQ papers." ---- The Surgeon

"Unique in its format, this review is both intentionally didactic and repetitive and focuses on most commonly addressed examination subjects ... Each topic is introduced in question format and the key learning points then summarized succinctly. This style of presentation is unique and particularly useful to those preparing for oral examinations, as it clearly breaks down general questions for easy and organized responses. Additionally, the margins contain several examination tips, which may be useful in studying for written and particularly oral examinations ... Overall, the format and organization of this review book sets it apart from others. Despite potential differences between the American and British training and examinations, this review may be useful as an adjunctive study guide in preparation for the American boards or the OKAP." ---- American Journal of Ophthalmology

"Granted this book is addressed primarily to those who take the British style examinations but it could be easily used by trainees in countries where exams are slightly different ... Overall, Dr Wong includes an enormous amount of information in just over 400 pages, and has done so in an attractive way. The book is easy to read with outline forms and lots of highlighted information in box or table presentations." ---- British Journal of Ophthalmology

The Sellout: A Novel, by Paul Beatty

Winner of the 2016 Man Booker Prize

Winner of the 2015 National Book Critics Circle Award in Fiction

Named one of the best books of 2015 by The New York Times Book Review and the Wall Street Journal

A biting satire about a young man's isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, Paul Beatty's The Sellout showcases a comic genius at the top of his game. It challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality―the black Chinese restaurant.

Born in the "agrarian ghetto" of Dickens―on the southern outskirts of Los Angeles―the narrator of The Sellout resigns himself to the fate of lower-middle-class Californians: "I'd die in the same bedroom I'd grown up in, looking up at the cracks in the stucco ceiling that've been there since '68 quake." Raised by a single father, a controversial sociologist, he spent his childhood as the subject in racially charged psychological studies. He is led to believe that his father's pioneering work will result in a memoir that will solve his family's financial woes. But when his father is killed in a police shoot-out, he realizes there never was a memoir. All that's left is the bill for a drive-thru funeral.

Fuelled by this deceit and the general disrepair of his hometown, the narrator sets out to right another wrong: Dickens has literally been removed from the map to save California from further embarrassment. Enlisting the help of the town's most famous resident―the last surviving Little Rascal, Hominy Jenkins―he initiates the most outrageous action conceivable: reinstating slavery and segregating the local high school, which lands him in the Supreme Court.

Review

“The first 100 pages of [Paul Beatty's] new novel, The Sellout, are the most caustic and the most badass first 100 pages of an American novel I've read in at least a decade. I gave up underlining the killer bits because my arm began to hurt . . . [They] read like the most concussive monologues and interviews of Chris Rock, Richard Pryor and Dave Chappelle wrapped in a satirical yet surprisingly delicate literary and historical sensibility . . . The jokes come up through your spleen . . . The riffs don't stop coming in this landmark and deeply aware comic novel . . . [It] puts you down in a place that's miles from where it picked you up.” ―Dwight Garner, The New York Times

“[The Sellout] is among the most important and difficult American novels written in the 21st century . . . It is a bruising novel that readers will likely never forget.” ―Kiese Laymon, Los Angeles Times

“Swiftian satire of the highest order . . . Giddy, scathing and dazzling.” ―Sam Sacks, The Wall Street Journal

“The Sellout isn't just one of the most hilarious American novels in years, it also might be the first truly great satirical novel of the century . . . [It] is a comic masterpiece, but it's much more than just that-it's one of the smartest and most honest reflections on race and identity in America in a very long time.” ―Michael Schaub, NPR.org

“Beatty, author of the deservedly highly praised The White Boy Shuffle (1996), here outdoes himself and possibly everybody else in a send-up of race, popular culture, and politics in today's America . . . Beatty hits on all cylinders in a darkly funny, dead-on-target, elegantly written satire . . . [The Sellout] is frequently laugh-out-loud funny and, in the way of the great ones, profoundly thought provoking. A major contribution.” ―Mark Levin, Booklist (starred review)

“The Sellout is brilliant. Amazing. Like demented angels wrote it.” ―Sarah Silverman

“I am glad that I read this insane book alone, with no one watching, because I fell apart with envy, hysterics, and flat-out awe. Is there a more fiercely brilliant and scathingly hilarious American novelist than Paul Beatty?” ―Ben Marcus

“Paul Beatty has always been one of smartest, funniest, gutsiest writers in America, but The Sellout sets a new standard. It's a spectacular explosion of comic daring, cultural provocation, brilliant, hilarious prose, and genuine heart.” ―Sam Lipsyte

Here's how you should read this book
By Sarah B
Rather than copy the other very astute reviews, let me just tell you how to read this book. It's challenging, and it doesn't always follow the standard dictates of plot, but you may enjoy it more if you know what to expect.

1) It's not a page-turning, finish-in-one-night kind of book. If you try, you'll miss out. I had to read it over several days, each session giving me a hundred things to think about.

2) When you get anxious for the plot to pick up, think of it as satirical standup, and read it like you'd listen to the comics to which Beatty's compared, namely Dave Chapelle. (If you're thinking of it as a novel instead of as satire, you can lose the thread of hilarity) When you're overwhelmed by the satire, think of it as a novel and try to piece together the experiences that make up Bonbon's character. It's hard to get hold of his character at times, and trying to summarize Bonbon Me's character is a (rewarding) reading experience in and of itself.

3) You may want to have google at hand so you don't miss out on the plethora (this word is on my mind after one particularly funny bit near the end), of cultural and historical references. You might know Plessy v. Ferguson and the scopes trial, but it would be hard, I think, to catch every reference, and the satire depends on them.

4) Yes, it's funny, but not in the LOL way as often as 'that so true it's painful' way. Reading the reviews, I expected to be chuckling every few pages. Instead I had a wry grin every few sentences. Don't let this deter you. The verbs come at the end of sentences so often that you really have to read it at a run if you don't want to lose the thread of what's going on, but I can guarantee the thread is worth catching. In the last few pages of the book, Beatty comes as close to speaking to you plainly as the author as he does in the entire novel, and what he had to say tied the its many disparate observations together perfectly.

Bad timing for a satiric novel about racism, unless you're devastatingly good
By Bartolo
Who writes like this? I asked myself, having been overwhelmed with satiric jabs after about 25 densely written pages. Ishmael Reed? And then why compare Beatty only to another black writer? Was that racist? Woody Allen wrote this densely, stories full of caricatures and outrageous situations, but New-York-Jewish in subject, and then only a few pages long, not an entire novel. Surely Beatty couldn't keep it up.

But by page 227 his comic inventions were still going strong. Here the protagonist converts the "long out-of-business brushless car wash" in his L.A. ghetto into a "tunnel of whiteness" for the local children, with "several race wash options:"

Regular Whiteness:
Benefit of the Doubt
Higher Life Expectancy
Lower Insurance Premiums

Deluxe Whiteness:
Regular Whiteness Plus
Warnings instead of Arrests from the Police
Decent Seats at Concerts and Sporting Events
World Revolves Around You and Your Concerns

Super Deluxe Whiteness:
Deluxe Whiteness Plus Jobs with Annual Bonuses
Military Service Is for Suckers
Legacy Admission to College of Your Choice
Therapists That Listen
Boats That You Never Use
All Vices and Bad Habits Referred to as "Phases"
Not Responsible for Scratches, Dents, and Items Left in the Subconscious

By "dense," I mean that almost every sentence contains a comic explosion, a twist, something that leaves you breathless or laughing out loud. Who does that? I thought of Barry Hannah, a Southern writer now gone. I think Hannah would have admired Beatty and recognized a literary kinsman. Also, something about Beatty's writing seemed to come from African-American oratory, its ornateness maybe, like Stanley Crouch's writing about jazz, but it wasn't self-conscious. Certainly the point of view was uniquely African-American, and I'm sure as a white reader I missed some of the inside humor. But plenty hit home with me, and would with almost any other half-alert citizen of this great land.

Speaking of which: this is a horrible time in our culture—with everyone's cell phones recording the underbelly of brutal racist policing, with political reactionaries running amok—to be attempting satire. It damn well better be funny. Beatty succeeds with a scenario that's not only side-splitting but right up to the minute. (I'm tempted to give more examples but will forbear) He's brilliant. (He's also profane and vulgar, as how could he not be? The n-word alone is used probably 1000 times)

Chris Rock can be devastatingly funny sometimes. Key & Peele can be outrageously funny sometimes. Making a barb leap off the written page is harder. As one critic said: Beatty can reduce a sacred cow to hamburger with one sentence.

Catch 22 for race in America today
By Kindle Customer
As James "Firlds of Fire" Webb carried a copy of Catch 22 around I Corps, I can see Catch 22 from an artistic distance as pure comedy.

Paul Beatty may in fact have more howling Catch 22 silliness per page than Major Major Major imagined. The narrator's two beloveds may even exceed Lieutenant Sheisskopf's wife.

From a Publisher's Clearing House grant of certiorari on his Me v. America law suit, and an unforgettably silly Clarence Thomas question about a black man accused of holding another as a slave, the word play and popular culture riffs resemble a fire hose.

Unless you take yourself too damn seriously, it is constant flow of chuckles interspersed with laugh-out-loud howlers. Myself, I was too serious circa page 120 but saw the Catch 22 analogy by page 200.

If you are not kinda sorta offended every now and again, you may not be paying close enough attention.

Obviously earned the Mann-Brooker prize, first to an American.
