Not my cup of tea

I'm sorry to say, I didn't care for this style of book writing - second person. I picked up this book because EVERYONE uses it as an example of what SECOND PERSON writing is, and that it's a great example of this kind of POV. Well, I'm sorry to differ, maybe I just don't get this second person thing...but it was annoying. Ugh!
I can't say if the writing is good -in it's self, maybe the guy is brilliant, but the STYLE and point of view as second person was just too different for me. I'm giving it a 3 - strickley because I can't tell if its good or not - I put it down pretty quickly. Just be for warned, if you like this style, maybe this book is as good as everyone seems to think.

Stunning

I can see where readers would either love or hate this book. For me, I loved the experience of reading it and have not stopped thinking about it after finishing it. It is full of life -- contradictions throughout, personal failings evident, varying standards of living and responsibility -- and ultimately imperfect. What made this such an enjoyable experience for me was the way in which McInerary constructed the story (even down to his use of 2nd person) and how he drew scenes with such simplicity and such depth. I particularly enjoyed the ending because it totally grabbed me by surprise. This is a classic that did not fail to disappoint.

Mixed feelings.

Book arrived in great condition. I don't read often, but the summary of this book hooked me. I liked the theme of the book, but it seemed a little slow in the middle and didn't give me enough of a resolution at the end to be happy. I ended up throwing the book at the wall after finishing the last page. Even after 2 weeks though, I still find myself narrating my own life like the main characters.

About the Author

Christian de Virgilio, MD is the Director of the General Surgery Residency Program at UCLA-Harbor Medical Center, and Co-Director of the 3rd Year UCLA Medical Student Surgery Clerkship. He has been awarded the UCLA Golden Apple Teacher of the Year Award from the UCLA School of Medicine nine times, and the National Golden Apple Teaching Award from the American Medical Student Association.

Top tier resource for the surgery rotation and the surgery shelf.

Surgery was my first clerkship of the year. After hearing about how hard the shelf exam can be (and that most of it is Medicine), I felt that the famed Pestana book wouldn't be enough. A friend mentioned this book, and I also found it referenced a few times on Student Doctor Network. I took the plunge.

Very thankful I made that decision. This book contains the answer to almost every (reasonable) question you'll get pimped on during the clerkship and served as a phenomenal tool for preparation for the shelf. It's a hefty book, so you'll need to start early, but it's worth it. I would try to read about a chapter a night (some days I would skip and make up for on the weekend). Don't necessarily go in order. I would highly suggest reading chapters relevant to the cases you have the next day...you'll look like a rockstar most of the time.

By the end of the rotation, I read the book cover-to-cover once (doing all the questions in the back as well). The questions are hard, but get you into the mindset required for the shelf. A few days before the shelf, I read Pestana cover-to-cover for the first time and did all of the questions in that book as well. It should only take you about a day. Most of Pestana is contained in this book, so it'll be a review. The day before the shelf exam, I reviewed the 'summary of essentials' page at the end of every chapter in this book. Somewhere along the way, I did about 90 of the UWorld Surgery questions. Didn't even finish them. I also did both NBME practice exams, which I would suggest. They don't offer answers, which is unfortunate, but you get to see the style of questions on the shelf...which can be helpful. You'll be less surprised when you get curveballs on the real thing.

I did not use NMS Casebook or any other books because I just didn't like them or they seemed to have tons of crazy tables and figures.

Ended with a raw score of 83, which at this time of year translated to the 95th percentile...which I was thrilled with. I'm not any smarter than a typical medical student, so this is a testament to the resources used. Could you go higher with some additional resources? Yeah. No doubt. But, this book was well-written and easy to read (for a textbook). I never felt like I was being thrown unnecessary details...it was all stuff I felt like I genuinely wanted to know as a future physician.

15 hours plus this book = HONOR the surgical clerkship

If you want to go into a competitive residency (or highly desired location) then you have to honor surgery. It is just a fact. This book makes that possible for ANY medical student - even if you are in the middle of the class like myself. The chapters are incredibly easy to read, very well explained, and packed with high yield information. Everything discussed is something a medical student will very likely be asked to answer at some point (on a test or in person). Don't let the size fool you. Each chapter should take no more than 15 minutes to read; there is a lot of blank space (not sure why the authors did that?). 59 chapters x 15 minutes is 885 ... divided by 60 .. is 15 hours. 15 solid hours with this book and there is no way you won't demolish the shelf exam and clerkship. The questions and explanations in the back of the book are also outstanding and more like the real shelf questions than UWorld or any other question set I used. This book was the only one I used for my surgery rotation and will likely reference it on my surgical sub-I's next year.

Hands down the best text I've read in medical school

Hands down the best text I've read in medical school. Extremely clear and focussed; very relevant to both the wards and the shelf exam. Would estimate it took me 30-40 hrs to read (more than another reviewed here estimated), but absolutely worth it. For the next edition, I would propose to the authors that the publisher should condense the text into a smaller physical form factor, since there is significant blank space on each page and the book was a bit heavy to carry around. All around just an incredible piece of work though.

This is book has the 2010 American Heart Association guidelines ...

This is book has the 2010 American Heart Association guidelines that is required for basic CPR & First Aid training. Note: The guidelines change every 5 years. The new books with the 2015 guidelines should be available in early 2016. It takes the AHA about a year to make the books available & start teaching the new guidelines once the guidelines are announced.

Good Reference!

This student work book is excellent to have on hand. I initially purchased it for the certification course, even though we were told we did not have to have the book to complete the course. However, I like to keep reference books like this on hand for reminders. The AHA certification lasts two years, so I think it is valuable for me to have a resource to reference in between certification courses. I believe there is a newer version that has been released at this point but there aren't too many differences.

Every home should have this book.

I recommend every home should have a copy in order to keep their family and themselves safe. Each person should review it periodically so he or she would know what to do when they have to react quickly in a real live situation as the book will have already prepare them.
I am also currently CPR First Aid AED Certified.

About the Author

Gary Dessler has degrees from New York University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the Baruch School of Business of the City University of New York. Dr. Dessler’s best-selling Human Resource Management is also available in more than 10 languages including Russian and Chinese. Misleading Cover.....

I can assure you that this book will not teach you to shrink a boat and place it within glass. It will also not teach you how to be a one eyed pirate either. Now if you happen to hire a one eyed pirate who has a sexual harassment case which entails a glass boat and a mini boat.....then you will be fully prepared to deal with this situation after reviewing the contents of this book.

Good overview of the subject.

This is the text we're currently using and it's one of the better text books that I've had to buy. It's well organized and pretty easy to understand. I've only noticed one or two spots where his writing becomes a tad superficial or biased, better than some of the other textbooks I've had to buy. I'd say it's a pretty good overview of the subject.

In an extortion case, the offender sent a message to the victim from a Web-based e-mail account. The Internet protocol (IP) address contained in the e-mail header showed that the message was sent from a computer located in an Internet café, but investigators were unable to determine who was using the computer at the time. Believing that the offender may have checked the Web-based e-mail account for responses to his message, investigators obtained all records relating to that account from the Internet service provider. These records indicated that the offender had indeed connected to the e-mail account from his home computer.

Even better than 3rd Edition

Criminal Profiling 4th Edition is even better than the famous 3rd edition!

I got my copy not all that long ago and so far I am pleased to see new content, everything is a lot more organized and easy to follow.

There are 25 chapters split in to 5 sections which are:

Section 1 - Introduction To Criminal Profiling
Section 2 - Forensic Victimology
Section 3 - Crime Scene Analysis
Section 4 - Offender Characteristics
Section 5 - Professional Issues

The terrorism chapter is much more expanded on the previous editions also.

As for the review left by "tactical tradecraft" needless to say this person did not read the last 2 editions of this textbook and obviously has something against personal against Turvey.

Hung up a sign "I'm a Profiler!"

I have to give this guy a lot of credit for self-promotion based on a minimal amount of knowledge and absolutely no prior experience. He went to college, got a degree and later a master's. Then he apparently decided he was a 'profiler.' This is a danger, because almost literally someone else could take a few psych classes or like a Pat Brown, be a good housewife and have an oddball tenant, and then declare herself a profiler. And worse yet, to have a loyal cadre of people who form something of a cult around his beliefs.

Having been trained by the FBI and having studied and profiled several hundred cases as a profiler in an FBI field office, I still wonder if I know enough to profess all of the knowledge Mr. Turvey claims to have acquired. He is the antithesis of what we were trained to do, namely to gain a wealth of experience working on REAL cases, then perhaps you are qualified to profile cases. Perhaps. However, Mr. Turvey apparently decided he was interested in profiling, and off he goes. He skipped right over the important part, having some EXPERIENCE before you profess some great knowledge.

There are probably some unfortunate students out there who have been taught 'profiling' directly out of one of Mr. Turvey's textbooks, and the professor has not spent a single moment ever viewing a crime scene. I just hope this doesn't become the standard, because the FBI pioneered the concept of criminal profiling, continues to do research, has the three 'Icons' of Ressler, Douglas and Hazelwood, who actually learned and did research, as opposed to magically declaring themselves as 'wizards' of profiling like this guy has. But, I'll give him some credit for self-promotion. Unfortunately, his background #or lack of it#, makes him a borderline fraud and charlatan.

The chapter on logic and cognition should be required as part of the education of any forensic professional (and most, if not all, non-forensic education).

The addition of chapters on forensic psychology and terrorism further cement this text as the standard go-to text for anyone affiliated with the criminal justice system.

Dr. Peter Wilson is part of the Electronic Systems Design research group within the School of Electronics & Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton. He is also a consultant for Integra Design Ltd in various aspects of embedded systems including design and modeling.

About the Author
Peter R. Wilson is Professor of Electronic Systems Engineering in the Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Bath. After obtaining degrees at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh he worked as a Senior Design Engineer with Ferranti, Scotland and then as a Technical Specialist for Analogy, Inc. in Oregon, USA. After obtaining his PhD at the University of Southampton, he joined the faculty and was a member of the Academic staff at the University of Southampton from 2002 till 2015 when he moved to the University of Bath. He has published more than 100 papers and 3 books. Peter Wilson is also a Fellow of the IET, Fellow of the British Computer Society, a Chartered Engineer in the UK and a Senior Member of the IEEE.

Good update on a standard, although kinda pricey for what it is

I happen to have access to a copy of the second edition of this book courtesy of my employer. It's a great reference when you're starting a new product or shifting to a new phase of product design (e.g., PCB layout, power distribution, EMC, etc.) since it clearly and thoroughly covers a lot of the basics. Ironically, many of the topics in it are *not* what a newly-minted electrical engineer coming out of school knows -- the information in the book is a lot of very *practical* advice about what really works (or not) and how things are really done (or not) in industry, which is a topic many schools don't address... or only address at a superficial level. Even for experienced engineers, it's a good resource to quickly clarify foggy memories of things like, "let's see... is it the X or Y capacitor types that are line to line?"

There's not as many additions to the third edition as you might expect. The new material is primary regarding programmable logic devices, ADCs, and a tiny bit on power management -- largely reflecting how ubiquitous programmable logic has has become, how many more devices now need at least some real-world (analog) input, and how many more devices today are battery-powered, I guess. The "Introduction to the 3rd Edition" does mention this -- that it "has really been an exercise of revision rather than revolution." As far as I can tell, that largely just means that they re-drew some of the illustrations, re-formatted some tables, re-flowed the text to fit the now-slightly-larger page size... and hopefully went over the material with a fine-toothed comb to check for errors?

It is true that today most of what's in this book can readily be found on-line with just a little Googling. However, I still think it has significant value in that the book is so comprehensive, rather than having to bookmark/search for a dozen different web sites each covering the equivalent of a few chapters of the book, you just have to crack open this one tome and it's all covered.

Overall, while this is a good book, it's kinda hard to recommend at anything approaching the full-retail price of sixty bucks. Forty would be more like it, IMO (and happens to be about the eBook price)... and I'd be recommending it to everyone as a "must have" if it were thirty or less. As-is, I suggest trying to find a bargain on the second edition, which should be available as the 3rd edition "takes over" ... although ironically as of today (4/6/12), the second edition has a higher price tag!

I'm not an EE, and I don't play one on television...

I'm a software guy. Putting a soldering iron in my hand is not the best decision you could make. But I put in a lot of time working for companies that are primarily hardware developers, so I had to learn something about electronics and circuit design. I mostly do website and graphics design these days, but I have some friends who are Electrical Engineers, and I like to be able to understand what they're saying sometimes. And I wanted something a bit more advanced that "Electronics for Dummies".

The Circuit Designer's Companion is way more advanced than that. Certainly more than I need, but I still found it very interesting when it wasn't making my brain hurt. And it's not totally irrelevant to software development; one of my first instructors in programming described a computer program as a "temporary circuit". I did learn a lot about electronics from reading it.

I showed this book to my EE friends, and they all wanted to steal it. I had some of them over to play cards one night when I had just got the book in. They saw it and spent the rest of the evening going through the book looking for the "new bits" while I worked on my website. Gotta love engineers.

Based on their recommendations, if you're in the electronics field, especially circuit design, you should have this book. (One of them has the first and second editions, and he still tried to steal mine!)

The slightest of drawbacks -- otherwise a brilliant source

It should be noted that this very valuable engineering book was written and updated by expert British engineers, and so the section on PCB layout practices revolves around millimeters and not inches. Just a slight drawback if you're a U.S. engineer where the PCB industry is interpreted mostly using mils (0.001"). I don't mind adding the conversions as I go. Have had the book for only one week as a reference at work and I've already used it several times. Highly recommended. It is actually more useful than (and works faster than) the internet.

About the Author
William James Dally is the Willard R. and Inez Kerr Bell Professor of Engineering at Stanford University and Chief Scientist at NVIDIA Corporation. He and his group have developed system architecture, network architecture, signaling, routing and synchronization technology that can be found in most large parallel computers today. He has many years of experience working in industry and academia, previously holding positions at Bell Labs, Caltech and MIT and consulting for Digital Equipment, Cray Research and Intel. He is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of the ACM and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He has received numerous honors including the ACM Eckert Mauchly Award, the IEEE Seymour Cray Award and the ACM Maurice Wilkes Award. He has published over 200 papers in these areas, holds over 75 issued patents and is an author of the textbooks Digital Systems Engineering and Principles and Practices of Interconnection Networks.

As a high speed digital system designer, you can not afford to neglect this great book. There are lots of insights and details for experienced designers. Thank Dally and Poulton.

Great overview of entire digital systems. A must have for any signal integrity engineer. Good price for the volume of information. Good info for design engineers as well.

Too scattered, not good in any one of the subjects.

I bought this book because it covers a lot of very useful subjects. However,I was very dissappointed reading it. It is too skimpy, not clearly explained and scattered. Almost any subject covered in this book is better covered in other books. It will make a very poor text book indeed. There are a lot of good books on signal integrity; from masterpieces like Clayton Paul's "Electromagnetic Compatibility" to the simple but pleasant book by Howard Johnson. There are infinitely better books on digital circuit design, on PLLs, on parasitic capacitances. Even subjects I knew before, I had a hard time following. I have to admit there are interesting sections with nice ideas that I haven't seen in any other books, but these little sections don't make up for the short comings of this book. Throwing things together doesn't make a good book. You have to care to write clearly and explain things.
