Perhaps the only fault to find with curator Harris' all-encompassing survey of global textiles is too much text, because the graphics do showcase well the history, creation, and development of cloth. On the other hand, without her words, how would readers discover that Bukhara susanis (embroidered covers) are now being used to cover TV sets? Or that natives of sub-Saharan Africa wove textile images into their myths? Aided by 24 experts and the resources of the Victoria and Albert and British museums, among others, this pricey tome is a good value for its wealth of information and ideas. Barbara Jacobs

About the Hardback Edition...

Harris' survey on Textiles has been a publishing hit since it first appeared in this hardback editon in 1993. And this is notable in a field full of beautiful books with beautiful pictures of beautiful textiles.

I believe the success of this book is that it actually delivers on its promise of providing encyclopedic information, with illustrations, of the entire history of textiles from ancient times. Harris and her many contributors offer both breadth and depth here. And, happily, the text serves the illustrations and the illustrations serve the text. One can cruise through the book finding inspiration and delight or one can dig in and actually study an aspect in the history of the culture of textiles.

Book details: large format chunky hardback, red cloth over boards with a sewn binding. In dustjacket. 3.75 pounnds. 320 pp. Something like 400 color illustrations.

In July 1961, Rotolo, a shy 17-year-old from Queens, met an up-and-coming young folk singer named Bob Dylan at an all-day folk festival at Riverside Church in Manhattan, and her life changed forever. For the next few years, Suze and Bobby lived a freewheeling life amid the bohemians in the emerging folk scene in Greenwich Village. Rotolo offers brief glimpses of the denizens populating the new music scene below 14th Street in the early '60s and recalls the excitement as writers and musicians like Dylan wandered in and out of each other's lives and apartments, trading music and lyrics to produce a new sound that would change American music. Yet as the woman who's clutching Dylan's arm on the cover of his second album Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, Rotolo doesn't give us a very freewheelin' memoir. She offers shallow, almost schoolgirl-like reflections on the man she loved and lived with for three years. In a dull and plodding manner, Rotolo provides no new insights into Dylan, claiming, as have so many, that he is mysterious and enigmatic. In an excerpt from one of her journals, she writes ambivalently that she believes in his genius and that he is an extraordinary writer, but that she doesn't think he's an honorable person. (May)

Rotolo was that young woman, and in this uneven, overlong, still fascinating memoir, she tells the story behind that photo and her love for Bob Dylan. Rotolo met Dylan in 1961; she was 17, he 20. While Dylan is the bedrock of her memoir—without him, would there be a book?—he isn’t the whole story. Rotolo discusses her own background (Italian heritage, Communist parents, inability to fit in growing up in Queens, the craziness and sexism of the era), but the dominant setting is the Greenwich Village folk scene. In informal, conversational style, Rotolo recalls those who made that scene, many of them famous but none more so than the complicated Dylan. Given his formidable presence, Rotolo’s adamant refusal to be more than “a string on his guitar” in the book is admirable. i deeply connected with this story

i loved this book, getting to know the person in the songs and the relationship, i really liked Suze in reading this book, would've loved to know her, grateful for her sharing of her experience, she was a couple of years dead when i read it, i'm glad she wrote the story while she was still here.

Unlike some reviewers, for me, the book was a page turner and did not last long enough, even though i read it slowly and closely. The story is told with genuineness, as the person she is, not who other people want her to be. She's someone who knows how to be true to herself.

One of the most heart wrenching parts of the book for me was when she was about 14, her sister, Carla, moved out on her own, and Suze was left alone with their mother, who was an over the top alcoholic and rage-aholic. During that period, Suze endured brutal emotional abuse, the target of wild loud hate-filled rants from which she had no escape, as her tortured depressed mother blamed Suze for her unhappiness. Suze had some support from outside the home, family friends who knew what she was going through and let her come and stay with them for respite sometimes.

Like all people, her mother was a mixture and Suze took the best and tried to shut out the worst. Maybe this had something to do with her increasingly difficult reaction to the raucous and chaotic atmosphere involved in being Dylan's girl. She was his first love, and he was hers, their relationship lasted most of 4 years, which is a long time for any first relationship, much less one that had so little privacy, and so many amazing challenges to cope with.

Suze grew up lonely and often alone as a kid, she knew and adapted to solitude. She drew on her strengths to entertain and educate herself and to develop her creativity and to evolve her morals and values.

It was one of those stories where, even though i know how it's going to turn out, i couldn't help wishing for a different ending, for true first love to triumph and all romantic dreams to come true. The story gives context to Suze's rejection of the relationship with Dylan and moving on to do many other things with her life, in which she surrounded herself with a loving family of her own and continued to develop and exercise her own special talents. It's no wonder Dylan, and then her husband to be, fell in love with her. She has a simple and honest charisma.

She gives her experience of the Village at that intense exciting time in history. i had a feeling of her disconnectedness throughout, of an objective observer, keeping a self-protective distance. Clearly, she maintained a limit on the depth of feeling she shared for the most part, she shared what she was comfortable sharing, she shared the person that she shares with the world, drawing the boundaries she chooses to draw. It's a memoir, it's not an expose or tell-all kind of style.

Not just Dylan or the Village

I learned of this memoir after Dylan received the Nobel Prize for poetry and was interested both because of him, but also because I spent a fair amount of time in the Village during the same era, being just a few years younger than Rotolo and Dylan. It wasn't what I expected (which was an opportunity to indulge in nostalgia). In many ways it is more important as it recollected the McCarthy Era, pre-feminist strictures, the evolution of folk music and the price of fame, both to the artist and those close to him/her. Rotolo, very much a deeply curious autodidact who did not do well in traditional educational settings, writes well and seemingly knowledgeably (one error I particularly noticed is that she referred to Theodore Reich as a psychologist rather than a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst). My major criticism of the book is that it didn't carry me along. My personal interest in the people and times kept me at it but there were times it felt a bit of a slog. Nonetheless, if you stick with it, I think you'll find it worthwhile if you have a general interest in Dylan, the early 60s in Greenwich Village.

A memorable memoir

Of the many books about the sixties era I’ve read, Suze Rotolo’s memoir A Freewheelin’ Time is one of the best. For this is a woman who lived the spirit of the 1960s. As girlfriend to Bob Dylan, she was right in the middle of the Greenwich Village folkie movement. Her memoir is filled with stories that offer insight into how these people thought and felt while it is a wealth of modern history. Most importantly, Rotolo takes us inside a young man from Michigan who shook off his middle class beginnings to become the foremost poet of his time, perhaps the foremost poet of the twentieth century. Not only do we hear of their growing love for each other and its eventual demise, but we see the astonishment of a young woman who, by chance, became the cover of one of the most iconic record albums of all time, Dylan’s The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan. At a time when album covers were skillfully and carefully designed, the photographer who did this famous shot just said, “Let’s go for a walk,” and on the walk, history was made. And Suze Rotolo is a part of that history and so much more of the history she relates in this engrossing book. She puts everything in perspective at the end: the sixties was a time when people were striving to make the world better by helping each other and sharing with each other; today, she says, people only ask, “What’s in it for me?”

Perfect renewal book for any couple, and not only

Challenging, convicting, and easy to relate to! I can say that it is one of the top few books I would recommend to couples, both newlyweds and those who have shared more years together. While it is best if both spouses read together, it can also be helpful if read individually. The advice also is helpful for other relationships. I was able to review this through a complementary e-edition through netgally. However, I would even consider getting a print edition myself for review and journaling.

It is a very good book that should be read together

My wish is that all couples new and old would read this book. It is so full of Biblical truth that so many couple need to hear. It is a very good book that should be read together, studied and prayed about as a team. This book opens your eyes to the 10 lies that couple believe about marriage.
I found it full of scripture that was wonderful to read and study and really think about and you are more connected after reading it.
You should grab a copy of this book today and transform your marriage.
I gave this book 5 stars and I HIGHLY recommend it. I want to encourage those who are having trouble in their marriage to give this book a try together and pray as you read it.

Confront the lies that make married life difficult

Dr. Chris Thurman utilized wisdom gained from his own marriage and from his professional marriage counseling career to create an insightful and informative book. The book is designed to help couples confront the lies that make married life difficult. Dr. Thurman clearly and concisely detailed ten falsehoods that couples tend to believe; he then provided examples and application points for moving forward (walking in truth).

The chapters appear to be drafted to allow couples to read and work through as stand-alones (of course, there is a natural flow to consecutive read). Many of the chapters include questions/assessments to help couples “put truth in action” by means of acknowledgement, assessment, adopting, acting, and asking. Although the book is firmly based on Christian principles; it is not overly “preachy” … nor is it unrealistic about expectations and possibility of change. Scripture reference and practical knowledge co-exist in equal measure.

I encourage those who are thinking about getting married, those newly married, as well as, those long-married to take a look at this refreshing work (as soon as it is released to public).

About the Author

Judith McKay, RN, OCN, received her degree from California State University, Hayward, and has been an oncology nurse involved in patient education for more than twenty-five years. She helped develop and taught chemotherapy orientation classes at the Alta Bates Summit Comprehensive Cancer Center in Berkeley, CA, where she currently works. McKay is coauthor of When Anger Hurts and contributed to the best-seller Self-Esteem.

Tamera Schacher, RN, OCN, MSN, is an oncology-certified nurse and a board-certified family nurse practitioner. She trained to become a registered nurse at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and received her master of science in nursing and family nurse practitioner degrees at Sonoma State University. For the past five years, she has worked at the Alta Bates Summit Comprehensive Cancer Center.

A practical road map for getting through chemo

Who could better write a book on chemotherapy than two chemo nurses from Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, one with over 25 years experience as a chemo nurse involved in patient education and the other with several years as an oncology-certified nurse and family nurse practitioner? These ladies are on the front lines, in the trenches, so to speak and they know all the questions and all the tricks you need to deal with chemotherapy. If you or a loved one are facing cancer treatment this is a good primer on what to expect and what you can do to lessen the effects and just get through the ordeal with your sanity intact. It starts with a short primer on cell life and cancer cells and goes into an explanation of some of the types of chemotherapy and treatments. They give you an idea of what to expect and how to cope with the side effects that may or may not occur. It's good to know what's normal and what isn't, when to check in with your doctor and when you can handle things on your own.

I liked that they wrote the book in easy to understand language and addressed a lot of practical issues like coping with hair loss, digestive changes, dealing with nausea, diarrhea or constipation and mouth and throat problems. Actually the anti-nausea medications are so good these days that a majority of people don't feel nausea at all. They name some of the common anti-nausea drugs and tell how each one works which I found useful. Another chapter that I really liked was the one on blood tests results and how to make sense of them. Looking these things up on the internet can be very confusing sometimes. Which ones are the most important, which one just follow some of the other values and which can be treated with drugs should they drop too low? This book explains all that. Oncologists usually provide some of this information but with so many questions and things to remember from a visit, it's nice to have it in book form where you can just go back and refer to it as different issues arise.

A few of the chapters were contributed by other experts such as the one on nutrition during chemo and the one on mind and body connection. These were very helpful and contributed lots of good ideas and suggestions. Stress, fertility, sexuality, the IV experience, relaxation techniques and finally life after treatments and being a survivor are all covered in this book. Just knowing what to expect, what to call your doctor about and what you can do yourself to address some of the issues can make the whole experience a little easier to deal with and a lot less scary. If you or a loved one is facing chemo, this book will help all of you get through it.

Covers most of the issues

This book should be given by the clinic to someone just diagnosed and beginning the chemo/radiation process. In the past year, I have had 900 hours of chemo and five weeks of daily radiation. I read this book out of curiosity. It validates all that I have experienced and provides good tips on what to expect and how to deal with the process and side effects. I gave the book four stars because I would have liked to have read more about after chemo is over. If you are not "cured", you have to deal with constant "looking over your shoulder" feelings and coping with doing it all over again if your cancer flares back up. Most cancer survivors must face the issue of a recurrence because the core issue of why the cancer occurred in the first place has not been resolved.

Knowledge is Power - This Guide Offers Lots of Both

Cancer is chilling, whether it happens to us, or to someone we love. Lots of us want to put our fingers in our ears and sing, "La-la-la, I can't hear you," and learn as little as possible about this disease. Until the day comes when we HAVE to learn about it. Then there is SO much information and it is all confusing as hell and terrifying.

This incredibly informative book breaks it down into 16 chapters that are intuitive and helpful. It can be read in order, or we can skip directly to: the chapter on Understanding Blood Tests, what the different kinds of blood cells are, and what lab results mean. Or, perhaps, the chapters on Preventing Nausea, or Coping with Other Digestion Changes. There are sections on relaxation, on Mind and Body working together, on Fertility, and Sexuality, and on Life After Cancer.

The language at the beginning of the chapters felt a little simplistic and condescending, along the lines of: "A beach is a place where the water washes in from the ocean." But pretty soon, I was in over my head, and VERY grateful that this book translated the medical jargon into easy-to-understand language and clear, uncomplicated explanations.

If you have cancer, or love someone who does, I highly recommend this book as a primer (get the paperback rather than e-version, so it can be more easily passed around the family), for understanding all the things you need to know. I felt SO much more empowered and knowledgeable after reading it.

The author, a physician trained in Iran (Your Body's Many Cries for Water), not only believes that drinking water is healthy, but makes extravagant claims for its curative powers. He recounts here how he first discovered the healing abilities of water, when he was a political prisoner more than 20 years ago. While incarcerated, he successfully treated with plain water the stress-induced peptic ulcers that afflicted some of his fellow prisoners. According to Batmanghelidj, most people rely on dry mouth to signal thirst and as a result are seriously dehydrated. He posits that symptoms like fatigue, anxiety or depression indicate dehydration, which may result in serious conditions such as asthma, hypertension, brain damage, cancer, constipation, allergies and obesity. In order to compensate for fluid lost through urination, respiration, and perspiration, Batmanghelidj suggests drinking a minimum of two quarts of plain water daily (not alcohol, caffeine beverages or juices). In order to maintain good health, he also advises ingesting half a teaspoon of salt to balance water intake. In addition, a diet consisting of 80% fruits and vegetables and 20% protein should be followed along with an exercise program. To back up his theories, the author presents a wealth of somewhat confusing medical data as well as patient anecdotes that testify to water as a cure for various diseases. Batmanghelidj does state, however, that those diagnosed with specific conditions should not stop taking their medications abruptly, nor should they embark on a water regime until they have consulted with their physician. This controversial program will have the greatest appeal for devotees of alternative medicine.

"Water, water, everywhere and not a drop to drink!"

Dr B's book is one of the most useful detailed observations about wellness and disease relating to our relationship with water, well correlated and compellingly illustrated with concurring scientific findings--all of which are available in any good medical text on the human physiognomy.

The book covers detailed understandings of water shortage in the body related to asthma, allergies, blood pressure disorders, diabetes, constipation, auto-immune diseases, pain, heartburn, hiatal hernia, colitis, ulcers, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, depression, gout---the list goes on and contains practically all the well-known and well-experienced villains of ill-health!

Although there are no clinically detailed case studies, for a book of this nature these are not needed. Dr B's observations and references to the relevant current medical teaching make for a solidly convincing case for reversing with water therapy what Dr B calls "Chronic Unintentional Dehydration". Most of our body is composed of water (about 75%). To think that dehydration takes place only when severe symptoms and bodily reactions take place is one the greatest single errors anyone can make as far as health and wellness is concerned. Like Coleridge's ancient mariner, in the present day we seem to be marooned upon a painted ocean going nowhere, losing our health because we have forgotten what it means to drink enough water.

Many people have knocked this finding of Dr B's without going into the merits of the findings that water is a fundamental nutrient for the body, chronic shortfall of which leads to serious dysfunction and disease. A key observation by Dr B is the pointing out the distinction between 'free' water availability in the body and the water that is priority-wise tied up with the body's metabolic functions, and the results of lack of free water in the body.

One reviewer took exception to Dr B's conclusion that morning sickness of pregnancy was not a sign of dehydration. Observation and results must guide any scientific search or research, not linking apparently similar end-points of 'dis-ease' under differing conditions--in this case: nausea-vomiting of long-distance cycling exertion (or some other cause) equated to the nausea-vomiting (morning sickness) of pregnancy.

In my own practise I confirm that Dr B's findings are perfectly correct, and the reason for it is quite straightforward. It is a signal that 'food/nutrition' other than water must not be taken, (water being a major nutrient for the body). This is because the digestion of food (even juice or milk) requires the body to tie up water resources at the cost of reduced functionality of other areas of the body where there is already a water shortfall. Morning sickness is entirely and quickly reversible by adding a proper water intake as well as a pinch of unrefined sea salt. Plain water intake acts very significantly different to watery foodstuffs in the bodily metabolism--again a fact available in any standard medical text.

In the relatively brief period of time I have systematically applied this knowledge to my practise, I have observed remarkable cures with just the addition of the water rehydration therapy to whatever other measures were being taken. In my own practise as a healer, based on Dr. B's findings I use the water requirement guideline for everyone who comes for treatment. (I give my rehydration protocol at the end of this review).

2+ Years Chronic periodic high fever (up to 105 F) in a female child of 9 years living in New Delhi, which was undiagnosed by all modern clinical tests and was over the past two and a half years variously treated as: repeated tonsillitis/acute strep infection (no medicine helped except homeopathy), Typhoid fever, tuberculosis, and of course 'Pyrexia of Unknown Origin' (PUO)and 'NAD' (nothing abnormal diagnosed/[not able to diagnose!]). The mother had been giving the child fruit juices and milk more or less as a 'healthy' alternative to water while the child had no more than 8-12 ounces of water per day.

All juices were stopped. In this particular episode, all antibiotics that had been given continuously for 10 days were stopped in the morning (fever 103 F) and increasing the water intake to between 800-1000 mls for the day, plus 2 pinches of unrefined sea salt on the tongue directly started bringing down the fever within 1 hour; fever gone in 3 more hours with no repetition of fever since then. All fruit juices were stopped. The liver and spleen enlargement disappeared in a few days.

Beginnings of arthritic knees in a 74 year old male from Nepal hitherto healthy, with inability to walk usual distances reversed by 30% in 15 days by his own report with the water rehydration protocol. He continues to improve slowly, where all painkillers and anti-inflammatories failed--he has stopped using anti-inflammatories on his own. If we factor in the fact that he has improved by 30% in distance walkable and pain after having given up the painkillers taken so far, I would think his improvement rate is actually much greater than 30% as a comparable situation.

Other results with rehydration therapy--Many cases of acute constipation reversed/cured; burning in urine with no infection and days later urinary infection diagnosed reversed and cured where antibiotics failed; chronic migraine headaches with nausea, vomiting---reversed/cured. Skin infections, pimples--cured. Angina pains--reversed/healed/cured. (Too early to say what is the clinical/pathological picture--it is under observation). Tear in the meniscus of knee requiring surgery healed with water therapy (and other energy healing methods) not now needing surgery according to the surgeon. Back aches and pains(slipped discs, sciatica) reversed= pain-free within days of water therapy (+ simple exercises in Dr B's book on backaches and arthritis--"How to deal simply with Rheumatoid joint pain & Back Pain"). Acidity and indigestions--healed. Irritable bowel syndrome with bleeding--healed alongwith addition of sugar water as recommended by Dr.B. For the auto-immune disorder, vasculitis (Behcets disease), the symptoms improved in 2 weeks on water +salt +vitamin regimen and continue to do so.

Conclusions: (1)The rehydration therapy works as a stand alone protective, preventive measure against disease. (2)The water therapy reverses many serious disease conditions. (3)Other therapies work much better with the water therapy, and in many cases additional medicinal/surgical measures are not needed where previously considered essential or inevitable. (4)The Ayurvedic dictum "indigestion is the mother of all disease" is fully proven here as all disease arise from three indigestion conditions:(a)Inability to digest (transform) the intake of food/liquids, emotions and thoughts; (b) Inability to expel/excrete indigestible matter or toxic matter (material or emotional), leading to: (c)Storage and accumulation in body fat and body tissues distorting the structures and functions of the body's organs and working systems.

Summary of the Rehydration protocol that I use based on Dr B's work is as follows:

Body weight in kilograms multiplied by 35 milliliters=Standard Total Plain water requirement per 24 hours. (Wt.KG x 35 mls or: Wt.Pounds x 0.55 ounces).

To the Standard Plain water requirement ADD the fluid amount (ounces or mls) of tea+coffe+colas multiplied by 1.1 as these fluid are diuretic as well as inducing sweating (the hot drinks)so you lose more water than you take in with these beverages.

This brings up the total plain water requirement for 24 hours. (Other fluids such as milk/juices do not count for supplementing the plain water requirement because being foods the body responds very differently to them as compared to plain water.) Add to this a couple of pinches of sea salt a day, and in a few hours/days/weeks the condition starts to reverse.

Telling people 'drink more water' or 'drink 10-12 glasses of water a day' is rarely followed, and people have a greatly erroneous idea about their actual water intake! I find a written schedule handed out to my patients works unfailingly.

The protocol I follow for adults as per Dr. B. is:

About 2 glasses of water (1 glass=8 ounces/230 mls) on waking in morning.
1 to 2 glasses of water 1/2 hour before meals.
1 glass of water 2-1/2 hours after a meal.
Other plain water during day as needed.
One multivitamin with minerals, and Vitamin B6 (50-100 mg per day) rounds off the program. (In practise I find the vitamins may not be needed after a few weeks if there is a dietary change in favor of a healthier diet which include more fresh vegetable and some fruits and nuts.)

This seems to be working very well generally. One of the first things to be noticed by all was that frequency of passing urine increased and the color became pale. (According to Ayurvedic guidelines passing urine 6 times a day is normal.) In the case of people who have water-retention/edema, a temporary salt restriction in food along with placing a pinch of sea salt on the tongue twice a day along with gradual increase of water helps in a few days to clear up such chronic conditions. The salt on tongue seems to get the brain to reorder the body's potassium-sodium-water balance when there is adequate availability of free water in the body. The need for diuretics and their attendant ill-effects was eliminated.

I do not offer any of the above as medical advice or suggestions-- I only share a summary of my observations as a results of following Dr. B's protocol. For complete details refer to his book. Anyone who understands and follows Dr. B's regimen can benefit similarly as have many patients in my practise. The man was a genius and apparently is still being greatly misunderstood. (He passed away in 2004).

Five Stars is too small a rating for knowledge of such great importance.

BEST BOOK !!!!

Everyone should own a copy of this book!! If everyone drank the water they should, we wouldn't be feeding as much $$ to the pharmacuetical companies... water is free and our bodies need it for everything!! Very enlightening information... do not hesitate to get this book!! I paid full cover price at Barnes and Nobles (knowing I could get it here cheaper) because
I couldn't stop reading it and its worth every penny!! I can feel a big difference and I'm telling everyone about it! It's not fair keeping this kind of knowledge a secret!! And what's more-- every doctor should have a copy in his/her practice and in turn, educate their patients... but since that won't happen, we have to help eachother and educate ourselves... hope this helps.

Easy simple to apply remedy for most of our illneses

Somehow we have been persuaded that natural products that have been here since the dawn of time are harmful to us. Water is one of those products.

I have found that simply following Dr. B's advice has had a profoundly positive effect on my health. Now I rarely drink soft drinks or juices. My weight dropped and stabilized.I eat smaller portions because after drinking water before and after meals I no longer want to eat as much as I did before.I do not have any major illnesses and very rarely have colds or flu.

Fortunately for me I was easily able to integrate water into my life because I use a small machine called a Chi Machine. The manufacturer recomended that users drink a glass of water before getting on the machine and after. So since I use it twice a day I was quickly able to get into the habit of drinking water.

I do drink filtered water. I am sensitive to the taste of chlorine in tap water. I use a Brita filter.

I first read Dr.B's Your Body's Many Cries for water in 1994. My first 4 copies of the book were 'borrowed' and never returned. I was surprised at how easy it was for some people to adopt the watercure.

It is not easy for most of us to undo bad habits. I estimate it will take probably one month of determination to get going but once you establish the habit you are on your way.

Eleven years later I do not regret being persuaded to go back to drinking water.Although Dr. B. did not approve of tea drinking I continued drinking about one cup a day.

I am not a fanatic. I still love the occasional freshy brewed cup of coffee.
