How Calculus Should've Been Taught

Extraordinary book -- it's hard to explain how good/useful this approach is to learning calculus. Unlike the usual "cram and memorise" approach, this book gives you the analogies and intuitions you need to actually *understand* calculus, so that later the formulas and details can actually make sense. 10/10

Indispensable

After learning Euler's Formula from Kalid's indispensable site, BetterExplained.com, I became intrigued by Euler and decided to look into his solution to the Basel Problem. With what I knew at the time, I could understand everything except the expansion of sin(x), which Euler introduces as a lemma. It turns out that this infinite series, originally discovered by Newton, is one of the results of calculus, which I knew nothing about. So I made learning calculus my next project.

I can't say that it was easy, but Kalid made it possible. Kalid is like everyone's personal tutor, answering questions on his site and providing encouragement when needed. His book is a great introduction, but if you're anything like me, you'll also have to refer to other sources. As a primer, the book doesn't get around to explaining the sine series, which is what I set out to understand. His site, however, does a brilliant job of bringing it alive. It's the most dynamic interpretation I have yet to come across, and it shows how calculus developed in ways that not even Newton could foresee.

An enjoyable guide to calculus

One thing that I remember most about this book is the excellent use of illustrations to explain concepts. From the very first chapter, the author seeks to find very accessible ways to explain concepts without obfuscating the fact that this is still a book about math. It's filled with plenty of excellent visuals and concrete examples aimed at helping you have a better understanding of what calculus is. If you're already a straight up Jedi in the world of math, maybe you would find this book remedial, but if you enjoy math and look at calculus as though you aren't really appreciating it for what it is, then this book might help you fully love calculus.

About the Author

Gerre Hancock is Organist and Master of the Choristers at Saint Thomas Church in New York City. He holds degrees from the University of Texas (B.Mus.) and Union Theological Seminary (M.Sac.Mus.) and has studied with E. William Doty, Robert Baker, Jean Langlais, and Marie-Claire Alain. He is a Fellow of the American Guild of Organists and is a founder and past president of the Association of Anglican Musicians. In addition to his duties at Saint Thomas Dr. Hancock teaches at Juilliard, at the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, and at the Eastman School. In 1981 he was appointed a Fellow of the Royal School of Church Music and was awarded the Doctor of Music from Nashotah House in 1986. He performs through the United States and Europe, frequently in duo recitals with his wife Judith Hancock.

Dr Hancock Captured for Further Enlightenment of Us All

Book is intended for improvisers, with major emphasis on organ (ideas certainly applicable to piano, harpsichord, and the like). I had the pleasure of attending several sessions and a masterclass with Dr Hancock during his lifetime (he died Jan 2012) and value capturing some of his extensive ideas for at-length perusal. This text will certainly mean more to a person with musical background, although keyboard skills are not specifically required. Recommended.

The Hoboken Chicken Emergency by Daniel Pinkwater

I read this book and thought it was funny and childish. I asked my husband to read it to our girls, who were 7 and 9 at the time, as part of the bedtime routine. My husband put alot of inflection into reading aloud. It was great to hear the laughter from all 3 of them. I found the book again and bought it again. My oldest is 15 and can not wait to read it again. She has to clean her room first. She is busy cleaning.

Fun Book!

We're big Daniel Pinkwater fans in the house. My husband read this one as a child, and we picked it up this summer so my son could read it (age 7). It's ridiculously silly, full of adventure, and was up to the usual Pinkwater standards.

I only gave it 4 stars because my favorite Daniel Pinkwater (written under the name D. Manus Pinkwater) was Lizard Music and in my opinion, nothing ever could top that!

One of Pinkwater's best. This is a must read for every 10 year old with a sense of humor. Actually, it also entertains the adult who happens upon it. I also recommend "Slaves of Spiegel", "Fat Men in Space", and "Alan Mendelsohn, Boy from Mars".

Mark Crilley kept his word when he asked his followers what should be in his next installment to the series.
I own all of his Mastering Manga books, and will continue to get the next one.

This offers more advanced techniques and ways to create characters.
I personally enjoyed the detailed posing, expression, and lighting explanations.
What I find the best about the Mastering Manga Series than any other drawing book, is that Mark motivates the reader in the best of ways possible.

I've learned a lot from him and continually getting better, see my progression of fan art I created for Nanana Maizoukin.

I bought this book without hesitation mostly because I was so happy with Mark Crilley's first two book in this series. (I hope he makes a 4th)
Again, Mark takes it one next level, improving techniques for a more advanced style while still not rushing things through the book.
More advanced poses, character interactions and character types are covered in the book as well as some techniques to help you speed up your drawing a little bit.
There's also tips and coverage of scenery, shadowing and backgrounds, some clothing and costume tips and coloring covered.

I recommend this book for those of you who are pretty good already, but are stuck on how to improve your art and bring it to the next level, although I did debate as to whether to give it 4 or 5 stars for a bit because I felt there could be a little bit more in this one.

The last word on meat substitutes - easy to make! Fool your friends!

Do not be intimidated by the thought on making your own vegan meat substitutes. It takes time, but it is easy, and once you get the process down, it gets even faster. Chef Skye is on the cutting edge of home made meat and cheeses. His process is practically foolproof - just read the directions carefully. As a matter of fact, I recommend reading through the entire book prior to starting.

If you are brand new to this type of cooking, you may need to augment your pantry before you begin: Vital Wheat Gluten (Bob's Red Mill brand is readily available at Whole Foods and other stores of that type - my neighborhood Kroger's even carries it), extra firm tofu, mellow white miso are the main ingredients. For the seafood analogs, there are a couple of items that can be found on the Internet.

When Chef Skye advises to have your ingredients "mise en place", or gathered, measured, and ready to go, listen. Remember, when making seitan, it will need to chill for at least 8 hours, so planning ahead is essential.

First I made the 'meatloaf.' It has been years since I've used TVP, and this application for it was spot on. I've found that with the TVP dishes, as I live at altitude, (7,000'), I like to add a little more moisture. However the seitan recipes do not need to be adjusted for altitude.

The next item I made was the Porq cutlets. The Tomkatsu recipe provided was delicious and I made the leftover cutlets "Parmagiana" style the next day. I'll be damned if it didn't taste exactly as I remembered veal parmagiana tasting many years ago. They texture was great. I followed by making the "Chik'n fingers and cutlets" which became coconut Chick'n and some more Parmagiana (I used Chef Skye's Mozzarella recipe - which melts beautifully and is a great hit at parties).

Most vegans I know did not give up meat because of taste - but for compassion's sake. These recipes are a wonderful way to reintroduce cruelty-free cuisine, and what is great is that you know *exactly* what is going in to your food. It is ultimately cheaper than store bought and much tastier.

One more note: Seitan develops flavor from the broth that it is simmered in. You can cheat by using instant broth, although if you have the time, making the broth from scratch yields wonderful results, and the remaining liquid can be frozen for later use.

Another hidden gem is that Chef Skye always adds condiment recipes to each of his cookbooks and they are worth a look. The Worschestire sauce is a staple that you must have on hand. The quick Sour Cream, beats anything commercial. Lastly, don't overlook the opportunity to join The Gentle Chef facebook group. There, you will get great idea, support and assistance in your journey on compassionate eating. And the group is all about Chef Skye's recipes - no need to wade through politics - just food.

Chef Skye is a vegan God

I bought the ebook version of this book because I have all of Skye's other cookbooks. I was impressed with the first one and I will buy every book he puts out because his recipes are amazing. The first recipe I tried from Seitan and Beyond was the meatloaf. That was 5 stars and it was by far the best vegan meatloaf recipe I have ever made. I have tried so many in the last 4 years and none of them were a hit with my family but the one from Seitan and Beyond was such a hit that I've already made it again. Even my omnivore family members loved it and asked for more. With the meatloaf I made the savory onion gravy. That was the best gravy I have ever made. My daughter even begged me to make this gravy for Thanksgiving. The other day I made a Beaf Roast and my wife commented that it was so moist and my seitan roasts I usually make tend to be on the dry side. This is because the seitan in Skye's recipes are prebaked then simmered in broth then chilled in the fridge with some broth. I even refrigerated leftovers for a few days without the broth and it still came out moist even after microwaving it. I made the simple pan gravy with the roast and that was delicious too. I prefer the savory onion gravy but the simple pan gravy was a hit too. I also made the country style ribs and my family loved those. They are great in the oven but we havent tried them on the grill yet. I have made them in the oven at least a dozen times now.

Really yummy!

I haven't had the book very long, but I made the shredded "chickun" recipe and it was soooo good! As it was baking, it smelled like a real chicken breast! I know that's a turn-off for some Vegan's, but I'm guessing if that's the case, you wouldn't even be looking at this book. I miss the taste of meat, but I would never consider eating it again after my eyes have been opened to the cruelty involved. I'm so excited to try the "porq" and the "beaf"! I will say that it took a little effort to round up some of the ingredients, but they were easily ordered from Amazon:) Also, it's definitely not convenience food...but well worth the time involved in creating it.

In the Age of Revolution, how did American women conceive their lives and marital obligations? By examining the attitudes and behaviors surrounding the contentious issues of family, contraception, abortion, sexuality, beauty, and identity, Susan E. Klepp demonstrates that many women--rural and urban, free and enslaved--began to radically redefine motherhood. They asserted, or attempted to assert, control over their bodies, their marriages, and their daughters' opportunities.

Late-eighteenth-century American women were among the first in the world to disavow the continual childbearing and large families that had long been considered ideal. Liberty, equality, and heartfelt religion led to new conceptions of virtuous, rational womanhood and responsible parenthood. These changes can be seen in falling birthrates, in advice to friends and kin, in portraits, and in a gradual, even reluctant, shift in men's opinions. Revolutionary-era women redefined femininity, fertility, family, and their futures by limiting births. Women might not have won the vote in the new Republic, they might not have gained formal rights in other spheres, but, Klepp argues, there was a women's revolution nonetheless.

the revolution behind the scenes

The United States did not seek to regulate contraception and abortion until the mid-nineteenth century. Family size peaked in the mid-eighteenth century. What happened in between? That, in a nutshell, is Klepp's topic in Revolutionary Conceptions. Klepp maintains that while the American Revolution was unfolding on the world stage, another, female-led revolution was unfolding behind the scenes as American couples began to delay marriage, space births, and curtail childbearing several years before the wives reached menopause. These changes transformed the pattern of women's lives and their very conception of their purpose in life.

This engaging book is a surprisingly quick read as scholarly works go. It has a strong statistical foundation, with due attention to regional and class differences. Klepp approaches her topic imaginatively: in one lavishly illustrated chapter, she explores how images of women gradually changed from emphasizing fertility to emphasizing self-control. The chapter on the technology of birth control is less satisfactory because Klepp doesn't wrap it up with a clear assessment of exactly how the typical Revolutionary-era woman limited family size, but she does at least provide a comprehensive overview of the full range of methods available, with an emphasis on emmenagogues. In short, Revolutionary Conceptions is a well-researched and fascinating book that challenges many previous theories about when and why Americans began to limit family size. Highly recommended.

La edición 2009 del clásico libro del Prof. Henrich viene corregida y aumentada.
Si bien tiene casi el mismo número de páginas que la edición anterior, la letra es más pequeña, hay más información, de suyo, más actualizada.
Conserva la claridad y amenidad que ya es conocida y que da cuenta de la excelencia editorial.
Los gráficos y figuras están bien diseñados, ayudan a clarificar, aún más, los conceptos.
El libro comienza explicando las caracteráisticas de la membrana de diálisis, continúa con los accesos vasculares, anticoagulación, el modelo cinético de la urea, adecuación, diálisis de alto flujo, diálisis continua, fármacos en diálisis,peritoneodiálisis, y después, casi la mitad del libro, son los problemas clínicos de un enfermo dializado, a saber, hipertensión, problemas nutricionales, ácido base, hemostasia,diálisis en el anciano, estudio de trasplante, medidas de calidad, etc.
En síntesis, un libro que en 752 páginas reúne el conocimiento más sólido sobre diálisis, expuesto en forma amena y con una cuidada edición.
