Practice makes perfect

I've heard the phrase practice makes perfect all my life. It's what my parents always told me when they forced me to practice piano between lessons. It only makes sense that it translates over into test taking as well. The problem is, I don't take tests on a daily basis. While I'm certainly grateful for that fact, when I DO have to take tests, they seem daunting and very hard overall. When this important test popped up on my radar, I knew I had to be ready. And if practice makes perfect, then I wanted to practice. At first, I wasn't sure how I was going to do that, but then I found these practice questions so I grabbed them and got to work. The practice tests included in this guide really helped me not only see what types of things I would see on the test, but also to understand some of the material better. I was able to quiz myself and see which areas needed more work and what I already knew. Once I practiced enough and got good at many of the tests, I almost started enjoying taking them. I knew once I went into the real test that while I may not be perfect, I was certainly better off then I would have been had I not had so much practice.

I returned this purchase. I was looking for a study guide for the current test which as I understand is based on the DSM 5. The book refers to the DSM 4 TR. only. I think that this book ( as well as others on Amazon) are out of date.

Before I read "Pimp, Iceberg Slim's reputation was known to me through other celebrities such as Dave Chappelle and Ice T. Therefore, I didn't intend to review the book through my disdain for pimping and the way women are treated. With that said, this is one of the best books that I've read in years. I must admit that I am partial to autobiographies, but this book was superbly written. The characters were well constructed; the imagery and metaphors used to describe Slim's interaction with the characters and environments were brilliant. I enjoyed the colorful language, and was anxious to compare my interpretations of words with the actual meanings in the glossary. "Pimp" is a great example of raw, honest storytelling. As I enjoyed this novel, I felt like I was listening to the story flow from his lips.

Slim claimed to have an I.Q. of 175. I don't doubt it at all. Like Denzel's character so eloquently stated in movie "Malcolm X", "Indian Archie might've been a mathematical genius. We were all victims of the American social order. Until that time, there were three things I was always afraid of: a job, a bust and jail."

"Pimp" is a great piece of American literature.

Raw & Mesmerizing

It had been literally months since I last read a full book and "Pimp" has rekindled my passion for prose. The content of the story is deeply disturbing yet delivered with a linguistic swagger that keeps the reader enthralled and oftentimes in awe. It is a glimpse into the psyche of not only a mid-century American pimp, but the identity of urban African Americans through the lens of "the street". The detailed journey, which is recalled from the depression through the late 1950's gives the reader a startling insight into the thought process of a young adult yearning to realize underworld ambitions. The lengths the author goes to in order to grasp this dream and the depths to which he sinks are sometimes astonishing but more frequently sickening. He is acutely aware of the immorality of his profession yet vehemently pursues it with icy selfish indifference. This is not simply a stylistically groundbreaking book about some pimp. It is a commentary on the state and the plight of the African American struggling to find a place in the burgeoning post-war era of American history.

Icebergs shocking recount of his life as a pimp and addict allowed me to see the ugly dirty struggles of life in the underworld of. crime, hustling,,the sex trade and exploitation of women, and willing, consensual voluntarily choosing to become a slave in an effort to survive , belong and feel loved ,and valued as a successful whore/ pimp/ thief/ con... I walked the seedy, dangerous streets of crime in the inner_cities and d experienced serving a prison sentence in a filthy dangerous prison safely in the comfort of my home because Iceberg had the audacity and skill to transport me there. This is an enlarged thriller told excellently that captivates the reader to desire to keep turning the pages desiring to finish the transporting story in one sitting. Loved it!

A great book with useful exercises

The Music Theory Handbook by Marjorie Marryman is probably not for absolute beginners, unless they are working with a teacher. However, I was looking for a concise refresher, and this book was exactly what I needed. It is very easy to read, having had some prior exposure to the subject.
I have also been searching for some good exercises to reinforce material learned in harmony and musicianship courses. The last two chapters are full of great exercises. Don't wait to read the whole book before starting the exercises. You can start right in on parts 7 and 8 after reading part 1. I'm very glad I found this book.

I can say that the product is perfect in every way

Though, as a college student, I'm not particularly excited about the content of a textbook, I can say that the product is perfect in every way. It arrived to me in mint condition, with the glossy shine that all new paperback books should have. Every page was intact, and the size of the book is just right.

Interesting look at various problems raised by abuses of Internet

This collection of essays discusses abuses of the Internet and offers a variety of possible responses to those abuses. The collection of essays appears to be based on presentations made at a conference entitled "Speech, Privacy, and the Internet: The University and Beyond," which was held at the University of Chicago Law School in November 2008.

Collectively, the essays: (1) discuss the nature and extent of Internet abuses; (2) consider how they pose threats to privacy and reputation; (3) propose different solutions to those abuses; and (4) weigh the pros and cons of the freedom of speech and other implications of proposed solutions to Internet abuses. Eleven of the essays provide a legal analysis of Internet abuses, and propose legal solutions to the identified abuses. Two of the essays take a more philosophical approach to discussing Internet abuses. Because the book discusses Internet abuses primarily from a legal perspective, anyone interested in a social, ethical, technological, or business perspective of Internet abuses should look for other books.

The book is aimed at readers with training, experience, or background knowledge in law, and is not suitable for casual reading. The emphasis on legal perspectives may be discouraging to some readers, but the nature and significance of the Internet abuses discussed in the book shows that the subject is of importance to more than just the legal community.

The Internet resembles the Wild West when it comes to technology. Like many emerging industries the Internet does not need to follow traditional laws. Today anything really goes on the internet and the Communications Decency Act (CDA) allows web providers to use unregulated discussion without any liability. One of the several authors of this book compares this to the defamatory writing on the bathroom walls. This allows people to post things on the internet that would most likely get them into legal trouble in any other communication outlets. These hurtful comments can cause great emotional harm to its intended target. In the book these posters are referred to as juvenile posters, who offer no intellectual or valuable contribution to any internet forum. In layman's terms they are what we refer to us as trolls. As pointed out in the book the bathroom stalls comments are only seen by a few, but on the internet a certain defamatory comments can be seen by thousands. Sometimes legal action can be taken, but the Communication Decency Act lets the web providers off the hook many times. Hurtful or defamatory posts are not only nasty, but can also affect future employment prospects. It is no secret employers use the internet for referencing future employees.

Pornography and the objectifying of women is also a growing concern. Never in history has pornography been so assessable. The books state that this gives emotionally unstable individuals the ability to control and look at women as merely objects. This further degrades their already disturbed psychological nature. There are controls available that can stop this content from reaching children, but sometimes it is not effective.

These site and blogs are referred to as Cyber-Cesspools by one of the authors. They serve no purpose other to titillate, harass, humiliate, and violate the dignity of the exploited. Again the Communication Decency Act makes it a challenge to get rid of these sites.

Privacy is probably the most important issue for all of us on the internet. This is especially true with social networks that are full of personal information. Valuable personal and professional information can easily been taken off these sites illegally. This explains why Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter are advertising new safety measures for their services. It is also the responsibility of the individual who owns a Facebook account to provide information that will not make them look foolish in the future. As stated before a future employer may be looking on internet for information about you.

Like many emerging industries the internet is addressing legal issues visited in the past like monopolies and the definitions on what is decent or indecent material. As the Internet paves its way into the future I am sure more legal questions will be raised.

It worked for my daughter

My daughter raised her SAT score in Math considerably (about 80 points) after going through this book. She thought it was very helpful. Her problem was that since she had taken Algebra in 8th grade and Geometry in 9th, she had forgotten some basic things that the SAT tests in Math. It also helped her in some advanced areas. My wife helped her a bit (she's an economist w/ big math skills) and she also liked the book.

I got these for my 17yo son and with the help of his books and Dr. Steve, he want from 550 to 720. College is expensive, not getting into the right one even more so...these books are worth every penny.

At the end of the day you get out of it what you put in so that is an important component but these books provide your kid with foundational expertise, structured thought and practice that is invaluable.

As a student facing the SATs, I found this very informative. I like how Dr. Warner, discusses methods to use that can be applied to all problems which opens the opportunity open for scoring higher. I really enjoy the multiple ways he solves problems, which reinforces the idea of how much of a variety there is to solve a math problem. I highly recommend his books for math SAT prep!
